Biographical Information[edit]

In his single major league game with the St. Louis Browns on September 30, 1910, Ray Jansen had four hits in five at bats. However, he neither scored nor drove in a run. He finished his career with a batting average of .800. He holds the record for most hits by a player with just one career game, and highest career batting average for someone who made at least one out (a number of players have batted 1.000 in one to three career at-bats). Unfortunately, although he was a great hitter, he made three errors in the field, as his team's third baseman. As the St. Louis Globe-Democrat put it in its story about the game the next day: "He failed on almost every thing sent his way". The game was a 9-1 loss to pitcher Fred Olmstead of the Chicago White Sox. Olmstead set a record by allowing 16 hits in a one-run nine-inning game that day.

He played in the minors for several years after that, injuring his leg at one point.
