Biographical Information[edit]
Ralph Works was born in Payson, IL on March 6, 1888. He began his professional baseball career in the minor leagues starting in 1907 with the Medicine Hat Hatters and went to play for the Syracuse Stars in 1908. He made his big league debut with the Detroit Tigers on May 1, 1909 and remained with the team until late 1912 when his contract was purchased by a minor league club in Providence. He was selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the Rule V Draft before the end of the season and concluded 1912 in Cincinnati. Works played in just 5 games with the Reds in 1913 and bounced around in the minor leagues for a few more years before hanging up his cleats. He managed the Fulton Railroaders of the KITTY League for the first part of the 1922 season. Works was also the original manager of the Madison Greys in 1920. He was replaced by Dave Altizer in August. He died on August 8, 1941 after a big struggle with his wife, resulting in a murder-suicide.
