Biographical Information[edit]
Shortstop Preston Mattingly, son of Don Mattingly and brother of Taylor Mattingly, was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the supplemental first round of the 2006 amateur draft. He was signed by scout Marty Lamb and made his pro debut that year with the GCL Dodgers, hitting .290 with 12 stolen bases in 47 games. It would turn out to be by far his best professional season.
In 2007, Mattingly was the starting second baseman for the Great Lakes Loons of the Midwest League. He finished the season batting only .210 with 85 hits, 42 runs, 40 RBI, and 11 stolen bases in 404 at bats.
Mattingly started the 2008 season again in Midland, MI with the Loons. He hit only .224 in 92 games, further diminishing his aura as a prospect. In 2009, he played for the Inland Empire 66ers in the California League, but the much easier hitting environment only translated into a .238 batting average in 115 games, although he showed some hints of developing power with 25 doubles and 8 homers. More problematically, he had been moved into the outfield that season, and would have to depend solely on his bat to move any further ahead.
Preston experienced a further setback in 2010, when he missed two-thirds of the year with an injury. He played 25 games with the AZL Dodgers, hitting .237 while facing pitchers straight out of high school, and in 24 games with Inland Empire, he hit merely .194. By the time the 2011 season rolled around, even though his father was now the Dodgers' big league manager, he was reduced to the role of back-up outfielder in Class A, playing only 53 games between Great Lakes and the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes. He hit .232/.281/.354, and the Dodgers decided to let him go. In January of 2012, the New York Yankees, the team most associated with his father, signed him to a minor league contract, although it appeared to be more of as a favor than anything.
After spring training in 2012 Mattingly retired from baseball. He enrolled at Lamar University and joined the basketball team making 3 starts as a freshman.
