Portugal

Portugal is on the Iberian peninsula in Europe, west of Spain. Joe Abreu's parents came from here. The country hosted one of the 2008 European Championship Qualifiers but it is not otherwise a significant baseball country.

Portugal includes both a section on the European mainland, part of the Iberian peninsula south and west of Spain, and a number of island groups in the Atlantic Ocean, principally Madeira and the Azores.

In 2018, researchers from SABR discovered that Frank Thompson, who played in the National Association in 1875, about whom almost nothing was known, was actually born on the island of Madeira under the name "Augustus Fernandez", in 1852, making him the first and only major league player from the country until Isaiah Campbell made his debut in 2023, having been born in the Azores almost 150 years later.
