Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Phillip Diehl was drafted by the New York Yankees in the 27th round of the 2016 amateur draft. Before the 2019 season, on March 23rd, he was traded to the Colorado Rockies in return for OF Mike Tauchman in what was a considered a minor transaction, until the Yankees suffered a number of injuries to their outfielders and Tauchman was thrust into a regular playing role for a few weeks. For his part, Diehl began the season in AA with the Hartford Yard Goats, then in early May was promoted to AAA with the Albuquerque Isotopes.
Diehl was called up to the majors on June 10, 2019 and made his major league debut a day later, giving up 2 runs on 3 hits in one inning of relief in a 10-3 win over the Chicago Cubs. He pitched 10 games with no decisions and an ERA of 7.56 that year. In the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, he had a 10.50 ERA in 6 games for the Rockies. On April 14, 2021, he was claimed off waivers by the Cincinnati Reds, but spent that season in AAA with the Louisville Bats, going 2-3, 2.47 in 58 games.
He returned to the majors for 5 games with the Reds in 2022, this time with an ERA of 11.12. He was 2-1, 4.24 at Louisville. On July 28th, he was traded to the New York Mets along with OF Tyler Naquin in return for two minor leaguers, Jose Acuna and Hector Rodriguez.
