Biographical Information[edit]
Philip Bartelme was the second athletic director at the University of Michigan, from 1909-1921. After leaving the university in 1921, Bartelme spent the rest of his working days in the world of professional baseball. His career was closely tied to that of his friend Branch Rickey, who Bartelme had hired as Michigan's baseball coach in 1910.
Bartelme served as the president of the Syracuse Stars from 1922-1925, was the head of the St. Louis Cardinals' farm system in the 1930s, was president of the Sacramento Solons from 1936 to 1944, and finally as a scout for the Brooklyn Dodgers.
Bartelme died in Carmel, California at age 75.
