Biographical Information[edit]
Pedro Severino is a catcher who is primarily known for his defensive play. For example, he hit well below the Mendoza Line in two consecutive seasons, 2017 (.172) and 2018 (.168) while playing for the Washington Nationals. However, after joining the Baltimore Orioles in 2019, his bat showed unexpected life. He was hitting .268 as the team's regular catcher at the end of May, then on June 4th, he had a career game against the Texas Rangers, when he hit three homers and drove in 4 runs in a 12-11 win. The Rangers almost managed to pull off a win, however, as they scored 6 runs in the 9th, but with the tying run on base, Severino was unable to catch the third-strike pitch by Mychal Givens against Elvis Andrus. However, he ran to the backstop and managed to fire a strike to 1B Chris Davis in time to get Andrus for the final out, ending a wild game. He had never had a multiple-homer game before that, never mind one with three long balls.
Just before the start of the 2022 season, Severino was suspended for 80 games by Major League Baseball for testing positive for a PED, in his case Clomiphene, a drug normally used to induce ovulation. It had apparently been prescribed him to treat infertility issues and he had not checked that it contained a prohibited substance. He had signed with the Brewers as a free agent the previous November after spending three seasons with the Orioles. After serving the suspension, he went 4 for 18 in 8 games, then was placed on waivers on August 3rd.
