Oswego Sweegs

From BR Bullpen

Oswego, NY got its first professional baseball team in 1885 with the Oswego Sweegs of the New York State League. The team went 32-46, the worst record in the circuit, before the league folded on July 27. The Sweegs were the worst team in the five-team league. Prominent players included Jersey Bakely (1.07 earned runs allowed per game) and Bill Sweeney (1.33 earned runs per game, .289 average). Outfielder-utility man Buck West hit .292, the top mark by a regular. The team had three managers in its short life span. The next season the league expanded northwards and became known as the International League; the Oswego team became known as the Oswego Starchboxes.
