Biographical Information[edit]

Infielder Oswald Peraza was signed by the New York Yankees as an international amateur free agent out of Venezuela on July 2, 2016. He made his professional debut in 2017, but only really emerged as a prospect after being forced to sit out the 2020 season when the minor leagues were shut down by the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, he started in Class A with the Hudson Valley Renegades, and by the end of the year was in AAA with the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders. In 115 games, he hit .297/.356/.477 with 26 doubles and 18 homers, with most of his playing time coming in AA with the Somerset Patriots. In 2022, he spent the season in the International League with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, where he hit .259 in 99 games, with 19 homers and 50 RBIs.

He was called up to New Yankee Stadium at the start of September in 2022 and made a strong fist impression by hitting .306 in 18 games with 1 homer and 2 RBIs, for an OPS+ of .306. He played both shortstop and second base and saw some action in the postseason, going 0 for 3 in the Yankees' loss to the Houston Astros in the ALCS. In spring training in 2023, the Yankees decided that incumbent shortstop Isiah Kiner-Falefa was not providing enough offense and gave the opportunity to two of their top prospects to compete for the job: Peraza and Anthony Volpe, who had been the shortstop in AA in 2022, then had replaced Peraza in AAA following his call-up to the Show. The two were neck-and-neck heading into the final week of camp, with Volpe hitting better, but Peraza having the advantage of already being on the 40-man roster and of having done well in his first exposure to the majors the year before.
