Biographical Information

Osamu Tsutsui was an infielder and umpire.

He was on the Tokyo Kyojin during the 1936, 1937 and 1941 seasons. He was 5 for 23 with five walks and a double in the spring of 1936 then hit .215/.367/.354 in the fall. He batted .193/.315/.249 in the spring of 1937 and .263/.391/.365 in the fall. He batted .254/.315/.284 in 1941. Tsutsui hit .228/.351/.308 in 159 career games, with 72 runs, 51 RBI and 91 walks. He played 86 games at 2B, 38 at 1B and 35 at SS.

After losing the fingers on his left hand due to an accident with a grenade during World War II, Tsutsui became an umpire and was the first to appear in over 3,000 games. He finished with 3,446 games, a record that stood until Hiroya Tomizawa passed him in 1986. He worked 17 Japan Series and 10 All-Star Games.

Tsutsui was inducted into the Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame in 1991.
