Biographical Information[edit]

Ortwin Pieternella Sr. pitched for the Netherlands Antilles national team in the 1988 Baseball World Cup. He was roughed up in a start against Team USA, losing to Pat Combs; the US lineup featured Robin Ventura and Tino Martinez among others. He tied Wendell Elizabeth for second on the team with five games pitched, four behind Ronny Inecia. He worked only 5 1/3 IP, though, lowest on the staff. He gave up 13 hits, 10 walks and 14 runs (9 earned) while fanning none. He did not have the team's highest ERA - Elizabeth and Rudson Roberto were both higher. His son Ortwin Pieternella Jr. later played pro ball.
