The son of Omar Moreno, Omar Moreno Jr. played two years in the minor leagues. Like his father, he was an outfielder.

Moreno debuted at age 18 with the Great Falls Dodgers, hitting .218/~.384/.261 and stole 7 bases in 9 tries. He drew 32 walks in 49 games. With the 1999 Yakima Bears, Moreno batted .195/~.355/.203 with 33 walks and 30 runs in 44 games. He stole 11 bases and was caught 8 times. He returned in 2003 to hit .333 with 5 HR and 30 RBI for two teams in the Canadian Baseball League.

Moreno joined Panama's national team for the 2003 Baseball World Cup, which his father managed. Moreno's cause was probably aided by the loss of two Panamanian outfielders to suspensions, Earl Agnoly and Roberto Kelly, due to positive tests for banned substances. Moreno hit .294/.500/.324 with 12 walks and 12 runs in 10 games in right field to help Panama get its first Silver Medal in Baseball World Cup history. His 11 runs were the most in the round-robin phase. He led the tournament in walks, one ahead of Thiago Ojima and more than the entire Chinese and Italian teams. In the Gold Medal game, he was 0 for 3 with a walk and was caught stealing as Panama's leadoff hitter.
