Biographical Information[edit]

Omar Bencomo has pitched in the minor leagues an the CPBL. He is the father of Omar Bencomo Jr..

Bencomo began his professional career with the Boston Red Sox, and he was 3-2 with a 3.61 ERA and 5 saves for the Elmira Pioneers in 1983. He collected 6 saves with a 2.89 ERA in 41 appearances for the Winter Haven Red Sox in 1984, and he was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the AAA portion of the 1984 Rule V Draft. Bencomo pitched for the Navegantes del Magallanes in the winter, and he won the Rookie of the Year reward of the Venezuelan League. He was 3-2 with a 2.93 ERA for the Knoxville Blue Jays in 1985, and he also went 10-8 with a 3.09 ERA in 24 starts for the Kinston Blue Jays. He was 4th in the Jays chain in wins and 6th in strikeouts. He only pitched 3 games in 1986 due to injuries.

The Barinas native came back in 1987, and he was 8-11 with a 4.14 ERA in Knoxville. He struggled in 1988 as his ERA rose to 6.86 in 12 games, and he also pitched 3 games with a 3.00 ERA for the Syracuse Chiefs. The Jays released him after that season, and he returned to Venezuela. Bencomo also appeared with the Midland Angels in 1994, and his ERA was 6.04 in 6 games. The Mercuries Tigers signed him in 1996, and he was 5-7 with a 3.40 ERA that season. He improved to 8-10 with a 3.25 ERA in 1997, and he led the league with 3 shutouts. Bencomo then pitched for the Cardenales de Lara until he announced his retirement in 1999. He coached the Venezuela in the 2021 U-23 Baseball World Cup.
