In 1902 the Omaha Omahogs of the Western League became the Omaha Indians. They won the most games in the league (84-56) but lost the title to the Kansas City Blues on winning percentage, .603 to .600. The team bought Three-Finger Brown from the Terre Haute Hottentots of the Three-I League for $300 and then paid him $150 a month. Brown was the star of the show, tying KC ace Kid Nichols for the league lead with 27 wins. Also playing a key role was OF George Stone, who split the season with the Peoria Distillers and hit .346 (3rd in the Western) with 198 hits, leading the league.

The Indians sold Brown to the St. Louis Cardinals in 1903 and fell to last place (49-79). They changed their name and performance in 1904 when they became the Omaha Rangers.
