Ogdensburg Colts

From BR Bullpen

One of the charter members of the Canadian-American League, the Ogdensburg Colts were 38-45-3 in the league's first season under the management of Knotty Lee and Bernard Fasulo, finishing fourth of six clubs. A year later, they remained fourth at 55-47-3 under Lee but beat the Oswego Netherlands in the first round of the playoffs and the Gloversville Glovers in the second to take their lone title. They had drawn 27,827 fans that year, the most in the CAL. Three players crushed the ball, led by walk-on Maurice Van Robays, the only major leaguer to ever play for the Colts. He won the Triple Crown (.368, 43 HR, 150 RBI). Supporting him were Tony Gridaitis (.340, 25 HR, 100 RBI) and Joe Benson (.360, 24 HR, 114 RBI).

In 1938, Ed Lauer (17-7, 3.24) headed a staff with five pitchers who won 10 or more games. Gridaitis (.333/~.452/.667) led the league in homers (34), RBI (130) and runs (118) but their only All-Star was 2B John Zulberti (.320/~.428/.525, 19 SB, 110 R, 82 BB). 27,016 fans came out, third-most in the circuit. Lee's team was 66-52-6, third in the league, but fell in the playoffs. In '39, attendance fell to 19,849 and last place in the league. They were 60-58-4 for fifth place under Knotty Lee. Lauer (17-10, 3.48) again was a star.

Due to the falling attendance and lack of lights, the team was moved to Auburn, NY in 1940.
