Effective July 1, 2018 Lyndon State College and Johnson State College were merged into one institution - Northern Vermont University. The two campuses kept their own athletics programs. Subsequently in July 2023, Northern Vermont University was merged with Castleton University and Vermont Technical College to form Vermont State University. The new institution has five campuses, four of which have athletics.
