Biographical Information[edit]

Outfielder Nick Schnell was the 32nd selection of the 2018 amateur draft, as a compensation pick in the supplemental first round, by the Tampa Bay Rays. He was the Rays' third pick that year, following Matthew Liberatore at #16, and Shane McClanahan immediately before him; the pick was compensation for failure to sign Drew Rasmussen the previous year. He gave up a commitment to attend the University of Louisville in order to sign with the Rays.

Drafted out of high school and only 18, Schnell began his professional career with the GCL Rays, where he hit .239/.378/.373 in 19 games in 2018. In 2019, he began the year back in the Gulf Coast League, then earned two successive promotions, to the Princeton Rays of the Appalachian League and to the Bowling Green Hot Rods of the Midwest League. Altogether, his batting line was .265/.325/.448, with most of the damage coming with Princeton. In 55 games, he scored 39 runs and drove in 31, and hit 14 doubles, 6 triples and 5 homers while playing center field exclusively. He did not play anywhere in 2020 as the minor leagues were shut down by the Coronavirus pandemic.
