Biographical Information[edit]
Edward "Nick" Scharf was born in Baltimore, MD, died in Baltimore, and played major league ball in Baltimore in 1882-83. He was in 13 games, more in center field than at any other position.
In spite of the quote below, Scharf apparently played two games in 1884 for Richmond. He also was said to be part of a top amateur team in Baltimore called The Our Boys Club, per Sporting Life, April 16, 1884. As of July 10, 1885, Scharf was reported to be without engagement, per Sporting Life, July 15, 1885. In 1896 a player named Scharf played in the Atlantic League (there was also a Max Scharf active).
" The Virginia Base Ball Company . . . hold Scharf, their last season's short stop, on a contract for the coming season, but he says that he will not play ball and has asked for his release, saying that he has gone into business at his home in Baltimore." - Sporting Life, March 12, 1884
