Biographical Information[edit]
Utility player Nestor Velázquez spent 13 years in the minor leagues, from 1958 to 1970. He played in the Washington Senators/Minnesota Twins system from 1960 to 1970.
Generally light on power, he reached double digits in home runs twice: In 1963, when he hit .295/.360/.407 with 12 home runs and 46 RBI in 139 games for the Wilson Tobs and in 1965, when he hit .300/.380/.423 with 10 home runs and 58 RBI in 124 games between Wilson and the Charlotte Hornets.
He frequently showed good plate discipline, usually walking more than he struck out. In 1960, with the Erie Sailors, he had a .396 on-base percentage and 115 runs scored after walking 90 times and collecting 131 hits. The speedster also stole 30 bases that year.
In 1962, he was involved in a racial incident and stabbed by three assailants, but recovered to play again.
His career totals cannot be fully quantified, since he spent time in the Mexican League and data from his time there is unavailable. However, in his time in the affiliated leagues, he hit .265 with at least 140 steals and 1,197 hits in 1,303 games.
