Biographical Information[edit]
Infielder Nelson Ward was 12th round selection by the Seattle Mariners in the 2014 amateur draft, out of the University of Georgia. The scout was Dustin Evans. He began his professional career that season with the Pulaski Mariners of the Appalachian League and also played with the Everett AquaSox and Clinton LumberKings before the year was out. In 60 games, he hit .253/.336/.384 while splitting his time between second base and shortstop, his stats being boosted when he hit .350 in 11 games for Pulaski. In 2015, he began the season back in the Midwest League with Clinton, then was promoted to the Bakersfield Blaze of the California League at the beginning of June. He hit .278/.365/.436 in 122 games, with 19 doubles, 13 triples and 9 homers, scoring 81 runs and driving in 55. He mostly played second base, but also saw time at shortstop and third base. Having established himself as an interesting prospect, he was traded to the San Diego Padres on November 12th, alongside pitcher Enyel De Los Santos, in return for veteran major league reliever Joaquin Benoit.
