Biographical Information[edit]
Nelson "Nellie" Pott pitched a couple games for the 1922 Indians under manager Tris Speaker. Both his games were against the 1922 St. Louis Browns, who won 93 games that year.
In the minors he spent three seasons (1922-24) with the Milwaukee Brewers, winning in double figures each year. Also on the team in 1922-23 was the young Al Simmons.
He is not to be confused with a pitcher of a similar name, Nels Potter. There are three other major leaguers named Potts, and four named Potter, but he is the only one named Pott.
One writer put him on an all-marijuana-related team, with others such as Andy High, Ducky Hemp, Lil Stoner and others.[1]
"Think back to 1957, when the Cincinnati faithful submitted so many paper ballots that seven Redlegs were voted starters . . . one former ballplayer, Cincinnati native Nellie Pott, voted 820 times -- 818 more than the number of games he pitched in the majors." - ESPN article about the 1957 All Star Game when Cincinnati voters overwhelmed the voting system [2]
