Biographical Information

Nate Quarles played two seasons in the minors.

Quarles helped California-Riverside win the 1977 Division II College World Series. He was named a NCAA Division II All-American outfielder that year, joining Joe Lefebvre in being chosen. The California Angels took him in the 16th round of the 1977 amateur draft.

He hit .285/.382/.360 for the 1977 Idaho Falls Angels, stole 18 bases in 24 tries and scored 58 runs in 67 games, but only fielded .901 at third base (his main spot). He led the Pioneer League with 10 sacrifice flies, tied for 5th in swipes and was 10th in runs. Despite his low fielding percentage, it was still tops among starting third basemen in the circuit. The next year, Nate batted .263/.329/.387 for the Quad Cities Angels, with 24 doubles, 9 home runs and 13 steals (caught 3 times). He fielded just .867 in 33 games at 3B and was better at .947 in 77 at 2B (where he started ahead of Alan Wiggins).
