Nate Buttenfield almost made it into Organized Baseball for the first time at age 30.
Buttenfield had pitched for the Canton Crocodiles in 2000, going 0-3 with a 7.47 ERA. He returned to the professional ranks in 2007 with the Camden Riversharks and was 3-1 with a 4.56 ERA. He had been timed at 92 to 94 mph in the Federation and Butler Valley leagues that year.
In January of 2008, the 30-year-old was signed by the Toronto Blue Jays to a minor league deal. He decided not to go to spring training, though, as he wanted to keep his regular job. Buttenfield was a physical education teacher and baseball coach at North Hills Senior High School outside of Pittsburgh, PA. He said "I have a passion for teaching and coaching."
