Biographical Information[edit]

Infielder Naomichi Nishiura had a spectacular debut in Nippon Pro Baseball. Playing for the Yakult Swallows on March 28, 2014, he slugged a three-run home run against Kazuki Mishima of the Yokohama DeNA BayStars in his first career at-bat. In spite of this, he hit only .217 in 70 games, and the homer was his only one in his rookie year. He then settled into a role as a low-average hitting shortstop and third baseman for the Swallows, playing at least a few games in the Japanese minor leagues in each of his seasons.

His busiest season came in 2018, when he played 138 games for Yakult and hit .242 with 10 homers and 55 RBIs. He had a similar season in 2020, when he batted .245 with 10 homers and 43 RBIs in 101 games. In 2022, he posted the best average of his career in 71 games, finishing at .274, albeit with only 2 homers and 18 RBIs. While he may not have been a franchise cornerstone, his time on the Swallows coincided with a period of success as they won Central League pennants in 2015, 2021 and 2022 and were Japan Series champions in 2021.
