Biographical Information

Mordecai Davidson is remembered as the man who caused the first baseball players' strike.

Davidson was the owner of the Louisville Colonels in 1888-89, a team which played well under .500. Apparently feeling some fiscal pressure, Davidson tried to save money in various ways. A couple times, he gave himself the title as manager, although he apparently assigned the actual duties to a player. He also decided to fine players each time the team lost a game, something probably done more to save money than as an incentive to the players. The team went out on strike as a result.

One source says Davidson was from Port Washington, OH. As a young man, he worked as a laborer. It apparently isn't clear how he made enough money to buy a baseball team, but after the uproar during his ownership, he sold the team to the league. In later life, he was a salesman.
