Wagener Field at Monongalia County Ballpark
(Redirected from Monongalia County Ballpark)
Wagener Field at Monongalia County Ballpark in Granville, WV, was the home of Morgantown, WV, affiliated baseball from 2015 through 2019, ending that tenure as Monongalia County Ballpark. After that and the Coronavirus pandemic-canceled 2020 season, MLB's 2021 Minor League Reorganization eliminated the West Virginia Black Bears and most other New York-Pennsylvania League teams. They then joined the new amateur MLB Draft League.
West Virginia University Mountaineers baseball opened the ballpark to a campus then-baseball record 3,110 on April 10, 2015. WVU needed a better stadium after joining the Big 12 Conference, and a short-season professional tenant defrayed costs with no scheduling overlaps. WVU not only plays its home games here but is the ballpark's primary tenant.
The former Jamestown Jammers - within 220 miles of a dozen affiliated teams, four of them Triple-A - in a 73-year-old-ballpark were the logical pick to move. They were also a Pittsburgh Pirates' affiliate, and for major professional sports WVU is in Pittsburgh territory. The Bears were not on the original reorganization cut lists and expected to go full-season.
Seven seasons after the playpen opened and a year after the reorganization, WVU alumni Rick and Jay Wagener earned the prepended field name by donating $1 million to Mountaineer baseball.
