Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Mitch Spence was selected by the New York Yankees in the 10th round of the 2019 amateur draft out of the University of South Carolina Aiken. He began his pro career that same year with the Pulaski Yankees of the Appalachian League, going 2-3, 3.54 in 16 games as a relief pitcher, after having been a full-time starter in college.
He was forced to sit out the 2020 season when the minor leagues were shut down by the COVID-19 pandemic, and in 2021 spent a full season with the Hudson Valley Renegades in what was called the High-A East for that year only. He was the starting pitcher in 20 of his 23 appearances and went 7-6, 3.94 with 118 strikeouts in 105 innings. He then split 2022 between the Somerset Patriots of the AA Eastern League and the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders of the AAA International League, combining to go 6-7, 4.70 in 27 games. In 2023, he spent a full season at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, finishing at 8-8, 4.47, with 153 strikeouts in 163 innings. On December 6th, he was the first overall selection of the 2023 Rule V Draft, by the Oakland Athletics. It was a bit of a surprise, since he was not ranked on prospect lists, but the A's liked the fact that he controlled four different pitches and was ready to jump into a starting pitcher role at the major league level.
He made the A's Opening Day roster in 2024 and made his debut in the second game of the season against the Cleveland Guardians on March 29th, coming in the 6th inning in relief of Ross Stripling and pitching 3 innings, giving up just 1 run on 2 hits in a 6-4 loss.
