Biographical Information[edit]
Catcher Mitch Abeita played in the New York Yankees system from 2008 to 2011, for the independent Amarillo Sox in 2012 and for the independent Grand Prairie AirHogs in 2014. He rejoined the independent ranks in 2017, playing for the Cleburne Railroaders.
With the University of Nebraska in 2007, Abeita hit .286/.375/.383 with one home run and 20 RBI in 46 games. The following year, he hit .337/.471/.535 with 10 home runs, 45 runs scored, 63 hits and a 43-to-29 walks to strikeouts ratio in 56 games. He was taken by the Yankees in the 19th round of that year's draft and made his professional debut that summer.
Suiting up for the Staten Island Yankees, Abeita hit .250/.353/.349 with one home run and 19 RBI in 53 games then was 1 for 6 in the postseason. He threw out 40.7% of opposing base-stealers. The next year, with the Charleston RiverDogs, Abeita hit .225/.322/.329 with four home runs and 32 RBI in 74 games. He hit .273/.375/.352 with one home runs and 26 RBI in 77 games for the Tampa Yankees in 2010 (though he was 4 for 10 in the postseason) and in 2011, also with Tampa, he hit .221/.340/.312 with two home runs and 20 RBI in 61 games, throwing out 47% of base-stealers.
He was let go by the Yankees and latched on with Amarillo for 2012, hitting .260/.381/.422 with five home runs and 33 RBI in 49 games. After not playing in 2013, he returned in 2014 with the AirHogs and hit .230/.321/.270 in 74 at-bats. Back in pro ball in 2017, he hit .250/.315/.288 with no home runs and 4 RBI in 24 games for the Cleburne Railroaders.
Overall, Abeita hit .245/.349/.340 with 13 home runs and 137 RBI in 363 games over 7 seasons.
