Biographical Information

Catcher Milt Welch spent five seasons in professional baseball, playing in the minor leagues from 1943 to 1947, and appearing in one game for the major league Detroit Tigers on June 5, 1945. Milt experienced two at-bats with no hits after being brought up from the Buffalo Bisons of the International League and returned to Buffalo to finish out the season. This was it for Welch in the show.

In his short tour in the minors, Milt had his best year with the Hagerstown Owls of the class B Interstate League in 1944, when he appeared in 129 games and hit at a .302 clip with 4 home runs. He also had decent years with the 1943 Lockport Cubs of the class D Pony League, hitting .284 in 99 games and also with the 1946 Danville Leafs of the class C Carolina League, hitting .267 with 4 round-trippers in 129 games. Welch finished out his minor league run in 1947 at the age of 22, appearing in 413 games with a career batting average of .271 with 9 homers.

Welch then moved to the Provincial League, an Outlaw league that hosted most of the players that had been suspended for signing with the Mexican League in 1946. Welch, playing as Milt Manetz (his mother's maiden name), enjoyed two strong seasons as the regular catcher for the Granby Red Sox in 1948 and 1949. Welch then caught for a number of years in the early 1950s for the Pierre Cowboys in the Basin League of Western Canada Baseball.
