Biographical Information[edit]

Mikio Sendo played in Nippon Pro Baseball for 10 years.

Sendo played for Hokkaido Takushoku Bank in the industrial leagues after college. The Toei Flyers then drafted him in the 7th round of the 1971 NPB draft, and he was their 4th outfielder as a rookie. His first NPB hit was off Osamu Higashio and his first homer against Akira Kuramochi. Sendo improved to .275/.341/.392 with a career-high 10 homers in 1973, and he was 9th in the Pacific League in triples (3, tied with Don Buford, Taira Sumitomo, Kunio Fukutomi, Tsuyoshi Oshita and Kunizo Umeda). He then hit .256/.322/.348 in 1974, and his batting line was .281/.316/.370 in 1975.

The Fukuoka native hit .280/.327/.373 in 1976, but he suffered from injuries, so he only played 63 games with a .203/.240/.259 batting line in 1977. Sendo bounced back in 1978, hitting .305/.364/.400 in 295 at-bats. Had he qualified, he would ranked 9th in batting, between Masaru Tomita and Masahiro Doi. Sendo also attended the 1978 NPB All-Star Games, and he was 1-for-3, with a single against Higashio in Game 2. However, when new foreigner Bobby Mitchell joined the team in 1979, Sendo's spot was taken, and he only played 60 games with a .203/.253/.304 batting line. He hit .291/.345/.418 in 1980, then he announced his retirement in 1981. He then coached the Nippon Ham Fighters from 1982 to 1991.

Overall, Sendo hit .271/.324/.368 with 617 hits and 42 homers in 10 seasons in the NPB.
