Mike Thompson served as a replacement umpire in the American League in both 1978 and 1979. The first year, the regular umpires staged a one-day strike on August 25th and Thompson worked the game between the Kansas City Royals and the Texas Rangers at Arlington Stadium. Four days later, on August 29th, he worked another game at the same ballpark, this time filling out a crew along with Johnny James, who had also worked the August 25th game, and regular umpires Rich Garcia and Durwood Merrill. The following year, the regular umpires went on strike for a prolonged period at the start of the season, and Thompson worked 16 more games, all of them in Arlington.
