Biographical Information

Catcher Mike Simon was a teammate of Honus Wagner on the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1909 to 1913 and then played a couple of years in the Federal League. He came up during the 1909 season as a third-string catcher with the Pirates, even though back-up Paddy O'Connor had hardly played all year, with George Gibson starting 150 of the team's 154 games that season. Simon did get a few starts late in the year, the first on October 3rd and went 3-for-18 overall. The Pirates won the pennant and defeated the Detroit Tigers in the World Series, but Simon did not see any action in the postseason. He was again used sparingly in 1910, playing 22 games, but saw more action in later years, with 71 games in 1911, 92 in 1913, and a career-high 93 with the St. Louis Terriers of the Federal League in 1914. He was there primarily for his defensive skills, as he batted just .225 in over 1,000 major league at-bats.

He was the second player to come to the majors out of Indiana University, and since the first, Odie Porter, played only one game, Simon was the first Indiana University player to have a career in the majors.
