Mike Shields played four years in the minor leagues, with a 7-9 record.

Shields was picked by the Minnesota Twins in the 25th round of the 1967 amateur draft. He went 0-2 with a 7.62 ERA for the GCL Twins that year, allowing over two baserunners per inning.

In 1968, Shields pitched for three clubs in three different organizations - the St. Cloud Rox (3-5, 3.97), Salisbury Senators (1-1, 9.53, 2.59 WHIP) and Miami Marlins (4 unearned runs in 1 inning).

With the 1969 Orlando Twins, he found a stable home and made 41 appearances. He was 3-0 with 3 saves and a 5.86 ERA, though he again had a WHIP over 2. He was fifth in the Florida State League in games pitched.

In 1970, Mike concluded his career with a 0-1, 6.63 mark in 15 games for the Wisconsin Rapids Twins.
