Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Mike Shawaryn was drafted twice: first out of high school in the 32nd round in 2013, by the Kansas City Royals, and again in 2016, in the 5th round, by the Boston Red Sox coming out of the University of Maryland.

He began his professional career in 2016 with the Lowell Spinners of the New York-Penn League, going 0-1, 2.87 in 6 starts. In 2017, he made a combined 26 starts between the Greenville Drive of the South Atlantic League and the Salem Red Sox of the Carolina League, going 8-7, 3.81 in 134 2/3 innings. In 2018, he pitched in both AA and AAA, with the Portland Sea Dogs and Pawtucket Red Sox respectively, going 9-10, 3.44, with 132 strikeouts in 149 1/3 innings. After the season, he went to the Arizona Fall League where he was very solid, with a 2.13 ERA in 9 games, 8 of them in relief.

He started 2019 back with Pawtucket and was 1-2, 3.72 after 10 starts when he was called up to Boston on May 30th, to replace an injured Hector Velazquez before the start of a four-game series against the New York Yankees. He was expected to pitch out of the bullpen, at least initially, but did not get to make his debut immediately, as that day's scheduled game at Yankee Stadium was rained out. He had to wait a while to make his first appearance, as it only came a week later, on June 7th, in relief of Rick Porcello and Josh Taylor in a 5-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays. He allowed a run in 2 innings of work.
