Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Mike Proffitt played in the minor leagues from 1972 to 1974. He reached Triple-A in 1973 and 1974.

He was originally drafted out of high school by the Kansas City Royals in the 22nd round of the 1968 amateur draft by the Kansas City Royals - two picks after Spaceman Bill Lee - but did not sign a contract. After a successful college career, he was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 15th round of the 1972 amateur draft, after Ernie Whitt and Jason Thompson but ahead of Bob Pate, and began his professional career that year.

He pitched for the GCL Red Birds (1-1, 2.57) and Cedar Rapids Cardinals (3-2, 3.00) in 1972 and went a combined 4-3 with a 2.92 ERA in 15 games (10 starts). In 1973, he was 2-3 with a 2.54 ERA in 39 games (1 start) for the Salinas Packers (1-2, 6 Sv, 2.70 in 27 G, 67 K in 60 IP), Arkansas Travelers (1-3, Sv, 2.25 in 10 G) and Triple-A Tulsa Oilers. In his first taste of Triple-A action, he had a 0.00 ERA in 2 appearances and one save. With Arkansas (Sv, 3.68 in 10 G) and Tulsa (2-1, Sv, 3.00 in 22 G) in 1974, Proffitt was 2-1 with a 3.38 ERA in 32 relief appearances.

Overall, Proffitt was 8-9 with a 2.86 ERA in 86 games (11 starts).

Proffitt holds the Mississippi State University records for shutouts in a career (15) and ties B.J. Wallace for most in a season (4).
