Biographical Information

Mike Golden, a two-way player, played in the National Association in 1875 and in the National League in 1878. He was in 66 games in the outfield, 49 at pitcher and one at first base.

Golden pitched all the games of the short-lived 1875 Keokuk Westerns and then became a pitcher-outfielder with the 1875 Chicago White Stockings.

He played in 1877 for Indianapolis, not a member of the National League at the time.

With the 1878 Milwaukee Grays he was one of the regular outfielders and also the # 2 pitcher. The team almost went broke around July 1, and was sold to a new owner. At the end of August the players nearly went out on strike, and Golden was one of several players who brought the team up on charges with the league, claiming they were not paid in full for their services.

Golden in 1878 had one of the all-time highest unearned run averages per nine innings, beaten only by a couple players from 1876 (not counting the National Association).
