Biograpical Information[edit]

Mike Coombs has been a College Baseball assistant coach and is currently a summer collegiate manager.

Coombs played college baseball at Seminole Community College then Florida Southern College. He went undrafted but signed for the Detroit Tigers in 1974 where he played catcher for two years in the their minor league system reaching Single A. After leaving professional baseball Coombs went into coaching, and worked at his alma mater Florida Southern from 1979-1986. During that time the Moccasins won two NCAA Division-II titles. Coombs was also pitching coach of the Helena Brewers in 1990 and was pitching coach at Polk Community College in 1990 and the University of South Florida in 1991.

He is most notable for his time as manager of the Newport Gulls of the New England Collegiate Baseball League. In 2005, Coombs took over as manager after three games as the previous manager, Tommy Atkinson had to leave due to other commitments. Coombs led the Gulls to the NECBL title that year and stayed on as full-time manager. In 11 seasons, he led the Gulls to four NECBL championships and in the process has become the winningest manager in league history. His 2012 team was named summer collegiate national champion. Coombs stepped down at the end of the 2015 season but has since returned after a two year break.
