Michitaka Nishiyama played for the independent Winnipeg Goldeyes in 2004 and for the Fukuoka Softbank Hawks from 2006 to 2008.
Prior to playing in the United States, Nishiyama appeared in one Koshien Tournament and played for Showa Concrete in the industrial leagues. He signed with the Goldeyes for 2004 and pitched in one game with them, allowing two hits, one walk and one run in one-third of an inning for a 27.00 ERA. He was also 1 for 3 at the plate.
In 2005, Nishiyama pitched for the Ehime Mandarin Pirates of the Shikoku Island League. Timed at 94 mph, he led the league in wins and strikeouts and was drafted by the Fukuoka Softbank Hawks in the second round of the development phase of the 2005 NPB draft. With Fukuoka in 2006, he made two appearances and posted a 10.80 ERA, becoming the first former Shikoku Island League player to appear in Nippon Professional Baseball.
In 2007, Nishiyama made three starts, going 0-2 with a 4.20 ERA while walking 13 batters in 15 innings of work. In 2008, he made two relief appearances and posted a 21.00 ERA.
Overall, Nishiyama went 0-2 with a 7.59 ERA in seven Nippon Pro games. In 21 1/3 innings, he had 12 walks and 15 strikeouts.
Following the 2009 season, he became a minor league coach with Softbank.
