Biographical Information

Mike Jackson was signed by the Philadelphia Phillies and scout Doug Gassaway as a 2nd round pick (special) in the January 1984 amateur draft. He spent most of his career as a reliever (he only made 7 starts out of 1,005 games pitched), but one of those was a beauty. After making his debut as a reliever for the Phillies late in 1986 and being used in that role in April of 1987, he was inserted in the starting rotation on May 12th. He did not pitch more than five innings in his first four starts, but in his fifth, against the Montreal Expos on June 7th, he pitched hitless ball for 8 innings until Tim Raines hit a lead-off double in the 9th; he was removed from the game in favor of Steve Bedrosian after a wild pitch, a sacrifice fly and another hit, but still won the game, 3-1, for his first career win. He made two more starts, both times failing to reach the 5th inning, and never started another game after that.

Jackson is tied with Paul Assenmacher for most games pitched in the 1990s (644). During the course of his career, he made more than 1,000 pitching appearances as a major leaguer, a feat that has been accomplished by only a dozen other pitchers in history.

Jackson threw a fastball that maxed out at 98 MPH, a slider, and a forkball.
