Mayes Dobbins served in the military during World War II before attending Mercer University. He went on to play four years in the minor leagues. Debuting with the 1950 Eastman Dodgers, he hit .258/~.402/.316 with 110 walks (sixth in the Georgia State League) while playing second base. After not appearing in '51, he spent three years with the Vidalia Indians. In 1952, Dobbins put up a .257/~.430/.303 line with 100 runs scored, 22 steals and 135 walks, second in the Georgia State League. He batted .259 in '53 but slipped to .191 in '54.

After his playing career ended, Dobbins was a high school principal and coach. He died at age 78 after an extended illness.
