Biographical Information

Mauro Ruiz pitched and managed in Mexico.

Ruiz hit .389 for the Mexican national team in the 1955 Pan American Games but did not pitch then went 2-0 for Mexico in the 1959 Pan American Games; the rest of the staff was 1-2. Mauro tied Venezuelans Luis Peñalver and Manuel Perez for the best record in the event. In the 1959 Central American and Caribbean Games, he had a 0.35 ERA, second to Pedro Pérez, and went 2 for 13 as a backup 1B to Rafael Casillas.

He turned pro with the 1960 Tigres de México, going 7-7 with a 5.06 ERA and a 1.62 WHIP. In 1961, he turned in a 11-16, 4.98 campaign in which he allowed 267 hits and 153 runs (106 earned) in 195 innings. He led the Mexican League in losses. In 1962, he improved to 8-9, 3.08 for the Tigres. He split 1963 between the Tigres and the Pericos de Puebla (8-5, 3.80).

In 1964, the right-hander turned in a 10-6, 3.42 record out of the Puebla bullpen. He would have been in the Mexican League top 10 in ERA had he qualified. He turned in two similar campaigns in 1965 (8-3, 3.57) and 1966 (8-4, 3.49). In 1966, he led the Liga with 58 games pitched. In his last season in the LMB, he fell to 3-4, 4.57 for the 1967 Pericos. Overall, he had gone 63-54 with a 4.05 ERA in 350 games in the Mexican League (67 starts). He had allowed 1,148 hits and 337 walks in 989 IP while striking out 393.

Ruiz then became a manager. He guided the 1968 Empalme Rieleros, 1969 Águilas de Mexicali, Dorados de Chihuahua (part of 1973) and his old Tigres club (part of 1982).
