Mauricio Tequida made his pro debut in 2003 and appeared with 3 clubs - the DSL Dodgers North (0-1, 1.69), GCL Dodgers (0-4, 6 Sv, 2.49, 2 BB in 21 2/3 IP) and Vero Beach Dodgers (0 R in 9 1/3 IP). He also pitched for the Mexican national team in the 2003 Baseball World Cup with 3 runs allowed in 6 1/3 IP.
In 2004, Tequida was with Vero Beach (0-2, 5.25 in 5 G) and the Mexico City Red Devils (3-1, 4.32). He spent all of 2005 with Mexico City, where he went 4-1 with a 4.11 ERA in 44 contests. In 2006, Mauricio was 5-4 with 12 saves and a 3.19 ERA in 58 outings for the Red Devils. He tied for the Mexican League lead in appearances on the hill. He then pitched for Mexico in the 2006 COPABE Olympic Qualifiers - he allowed 3 unearned runs in 5 2/3 IP over 5 games as Mexico did not qualify for the 2008 Olympics but got a spot in the 2008 Final Olympic Qualification Tournament.
The right-hander struggled with the Naranjeros de Hermosillo in the 2007 Caribbean Series, with a 18.69 ERA. He did get their lone win of the Series, beating the Tigres de Aragua. Tequida was 3-1 with 14 saves and a 2.77 ERA for the 2007 Mexico City club. Chosen for Mexico's team for the 2007 Pan American Games, he allowed four hits while retiring only one batter but somehow avoided being charged with a run as Mexico won Bronze.
Tequida allowed 11 hits, 3 walks and 6 runs in 3 2/3 IP for the '08 Red Devils. He rebounded in 2009 to go 7-3 with a 3.90 ERA while being used occasionally as a starter for the first time in his career.
