Biographical Information[edit]

Outfielder Matty Johnson began his professional career in the independent leagues in 2010, earning Baseball America's designation as top independent league prospect. After hitting .313/.429/.379 with 24 stolen bases in 47 games for the Gateway Grizzlies that year, he was signed by the Boston Red Sox and stayed in their system through 2014. With speed his primary asset — he hit one home run in his first 991 plate appearances — Johnson stole 19, 9, 19 and 40 bases, respectively, in his four years in the Red Sox system; he added 10 triples in the final campaign. Returning to the indy rank for 2015 and 2016, he stole 42 bags the first year, before dropping to 9 (in 49 games) in 2016.

He was a New York-Penn League Mid-Season All-Star in 2011 and a MiLB.com Organization All-Star in 2014.
