Matthew Dancer has pitched several times for the South African national team. Dancer went 0-1 in the 2005 Baseball World Cup, allowing 6 walks, 4 hits (3 doubles) and 5 runs in just 3 2/3 IP. He took the loss against the host Dutch national team.

Dancer pitched one game in the 2006 World Baseball Classic, allowing 6 hits, 3 walks and 5 runs in 4 1/3 against Mexico. He had the second-best ERA on South Africa's weak staff after Robert Verschuren. In the 2007 Baseball World Cup, he gave up 18 hits and 5 walks in 10 innings for South Africa, with half of the hits going for extra bases. He gave up 2 runs in 4 innings against Japan and 8 runs in six innings against Italy.

Dancer pitched two games in the 2008 Final Olympic Qualification Tournament, giving up 2 runs on 4 hits and 3 walks in 3 1/3 IP against Team Canada and one run on 3 hits and 3 walks in 1 2/3 innings against host Taiwan. Overall, he was 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA.

He was on South Africa's roster for the 2009 World Baseball Classic but did not pitch in the Classic. He is expected to play in the 2009 Baseball World Cup.
