Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Matt Tenuta began his professional career in 2012, though he didn't reach Triple-A until his seventh season in 2018. He was initially taken by the Kansas City Royals in the 25th round of the 2012 amateur draft, a few picks ahead of pitcher Josh D. Smith. The signing scout was Casey Fahy.
Used primarily as a starter early in his career, he was one of only three Appalachian League pitchers to toss a complete game in 2015, with the others being Albert Abreu and Harol Gonzalez. He remained in the Royals system through 2017, earning a spot in the semi-exclusive Arizona Fall League that year—pitching for the Surprise Saguaros, he went 1-1 with a 6.39 ERA in 10 relief appearances. On March 22, 2018, he was traded with pitchers Ashton Goudeau, David McKay and Colin Rodgers to the Seattle Mariners for one dollar.[1] That's how one source describes it, at least. MiLB.com says Tenuta and Goudeau were traded to Seattle on March 22 and Rodgers was traded on March 20. Baseball-Reference.com says Goudeau was purchased on March 18 and McKay on March 24.
Either way, Tenuta became a Mariners farmhand. He pivoted to relieving, making 38 appearances in 2018, going 3-3 with a 3.03 ERA. In his first taste of Triple-A, he went 2-0 with a 3.21 ERA in 10 appearances for the Tacoma Rainiers. He remained in the Mariners system through 2019. After not pitching in 2020, he returned to pitch in the Mexican League. He also made some appearances in the Puerto Rico Winter League; his 2022-23 with the Santurce Crabbers was especially impressive, as he had a 0.40 ERA in 19 games (1 start).
