Biographical Information

Matt Stockmann played for both Canada and Britain in international competition.

He was Team Canada's #3 catcher in the 1998 Baseball World Cup, behind Dominic Campeau and Jamie Pietraszko. He went 0 for 6 with two whiffs; defensively, he had 11 putouts and opponents stole one base in one try. He played professionally for the 1999 Elmira Pioneers, going 5 for 22 with 3 doubles and a RBI. He had five passed balls in 10 games, but made no errors and threw out a third of those who tried to steal. He was on the Canadian roster for the 1999 Pan American Games but did not play (pitcher Julien Tucker was their only other player not to get into a game), backing up Andy Stewart at catcher.

Stockmann hit .185 as the top catcher for Britain in the 2001 European Championship, fielding .969 and allowing 10 steals in 12 tries. He had three hits, two runs and two RBI against Spain. In the 2003 European Championship, he batted .250 and drove in 7 runs in 7 games. He easily led Britain in RBI, three ahead of Alex Malihoudis and he played error-free defense; Stockmann had 51 chances at catcher without an error (leading backstops in the 2003 Euros). He tied Xavier Civit and future major leaguers Nick Markakis and Yurendell de Caster for third in the event in RBI, behind Bryan Engelhardt and Mario Chiarini. Matt slumped to .154/.154/.192 in the 2005 European Championship, his last international event; he again made no errors as Britain's starting backstop.
