Biographical Information

Matt Blank pitched for the Montreal Expos in 2000 and 2001, after having been the top pitcher in their minor league system in preceding years. He was solely a reliever the first season, while 4 of his 5 appearances the second year were as a starter, which was his role in the minors. Yet, despite the different usage, the results were very similar, with a 5.14 ERA in 14 inning in 2000, and 5.16 in 22 2/3 innings in 2001. Interestingly, he recorded two wins during his career, and they came in his last two appearances, on June 16 and June 21, in 2001.

The Expos had drafted him in the 11th round in the 1997 amateur draft out of Texas A&M University and he was signed by scout Joe Jordan. He had been drafted twice before - in the 37th round in 1994 by the New York Yankees and in the 40th round in 1995 by the Florida Marlins. He was the Expos Minor League Pitcher of the Year in 1998 when he went 14-3 between the Cape Fear Crocs and Jupiter Hammerheads, and repeated in 1999 when he was 15-8 between Jupiter and the AA Harrisburg Senators. He made his major league debut the following season.

In April of 2003, he was traded to the San Francisco Giants as the player to be named later in the trade that had brought P Livan Hernandez and C-3B Edwards Guzman to the Expos in exchange for P Jim Brower. However, he never played for the Giants in the majors.
