Biographical Information[edit]

Catcher Mat Nelson was drafted twice, first coming out of high school in the 39th round of the 2018 amateur draft by the Philadelphia Phillies, and again as the 35th pick of the 2021 amateur draft by the Cincinnati Reds. It was a Competitive Balance Round A pick, and he was coming off three seasons at Florida State University, where he was coming off a great season in which he had hit 23 homers in 53 games while batting .330. He was a first-team All-American that year and win the Buster Posey Award as the nation's best collegiate catcher. As a freshman, he had played in the 2019 College World Series.

He began his pro career the year he was drafted, 2021, although he only played 10 games - 2 with the ACL Reds and 10 with the Dayton Dragons - hitting .179. In 2022, he played 82 games at Dayton and hit .219/.303/.364 with 8 homers and 24 RBIs. In 2023, he returned to Dayton for a third straight year there, and hit .220 in 89 games, but in 12 games for the AA Chattanooga Lookouts, he hit .287 and slugged .568. Overall, his slash line was .229/.340/.437 and he hit 21 homers, as the power was starting to show up.
