Masaumi Shimizu played in Nippon Pro Baseball for 14 years.
Shimizu was drafted by the Chiba Lotte Marines in the first round of the 1996 NPB draft, and he hit .169/.201/.226 in 77 games in 1997. His batting line was .183/.236/.252 in 1998, and he played 107 games with a .219/.251/.288 batting line in 1999. Shimizu only got 102 plate appearances with a .292/.330/.326 batting line in 2000, and he became their starting catcher in 2001. He hit .188/.241/.241 that season, then he recorded a .257/.279/.336 batting line in 2002. Shimizu batted .209/.271/.291 in 91 games in 2003, and he went 8-for-36 in 2004.
The Marines then traded him to the Chunichi Dragons for Shigetoshi Yamakita, but he didn't get many chances with the Dragons. He only played 48 games combined for Chunichi in 6 seasons, and he was traded to the Softbank Hawks for Koji Mise in the middle of the 2010 season. Shimizu went 0-for-1 in 2011, and he announced his retirement. He then became the battery coach for the Hawks minor league team from 2012 to 2015 and for their big club from 2016 to 2017. He returned to the Marines as their battery coach from 2018 to 2022, and the Hawks named him their new minor league battery coach in 2023.
Overall, Shimizu hit .212/.254/.277 with 314 hits and 9 homers in 14 seasons in NPB.
