Biographical Information[edit]

Masato Matsui played in Nippon Pro Baseball for 12 years.

Matsui was drafted by the Chunichi Dragons in the 7th round of the 2009 NPB draft, and he spent his first three seasons in the minors as he only got 27 at-bats combined with the big club. Matsui hit .143/.217/.175 in 45 games in 2013, and he recorded a .176/.259/.232 batting line in 2014. He struggled again in 2015 as his batting line was .135/.179/.165, and he spent nearly the entire 2016 seasons in the minors. Matsui's batting line was .221/.303/.293 in 2017, and he played a career-high 92 games with a .229/.324/.298 batting line in 2018.

The Maebashi native went 7-for-33 in 2019, and he was traded with Yusuke Matsui and Steven Moya to the Orix Buffaloes for Kengo Takeda and Takahiro Matsuba. Matsui was 7-for-36 in the rest of the '19 season, and he played 23 games with a .222/.300/.361 batting line in 2020. He didn't get a single hit in the next two seasons with the big club, and he announced his retirement in 2022. Matsui later became the minor league battery coach for the Buffaloes in 2025.

Overall, Matsui hit .192/.270/.248 with 175 hits and 6 homers in 12 seasons in NPB.
